Description & Details: The Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute (DOE JGI, a division of Berkeley Lab) has an exciting opportunity available for a Postdoctoral Fellow. As part of a large multidisciplinary research program at the DOE JGI that is relevant to the DOE mission area, we seek to develop potent plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), leveraging synthetic biology. This position directly reports to the Synthetic Biology – Pathway Engineering Group Lead.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Developing PGPR, leveraging synthetic biology:
- Discover novel secondary metabolites with PGP traits.
- Computationally analyze genomic and transcriptomic data and identify genes and biosynthetic clusters responsible for production of these secondary metabolites using experimental and bioinformatics tools.
- Construct design via codon optimization and refactoring.
- Produce these secondary metabolites and analyze via LCMS.
- Extract, isolate (HPLC), characterize and elucidate structure (MS & NMR) of bioactive secondary metabolites.
- Construct building (DNA synthesis and assembly).
- Transformation into heterologous host strains (primarily, rhizobacteria).
- Optimize production conditions for these secondary metabolite.
- Perform 16S rDNA sequencing.
- Prepare DNA and RNA samples for sequencing analyses.
- Summarize experimental results and present them at group meetings.
- Keep precise and detailed laboratory notebooks.
- Manage relationships with our collaborators.
Required Qualifications:
- Ph.D. degree in relevant fields such as Microbiology, Natural Products Chemistry, Metabolic Engineering, Synthetic Biology, or Computational Biology.
- Strong motivation to contribute to develop the areas of research under the DOE mission.
- Detailed knowledge in microbial genetics, metabolism, and physiology.
- Ability to successfully work in a dynamic team environment.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
- Experience in secondary metabolite extraction, isolation and structure elucidation (HPLC, LC-MS, NMR analysis).
- Experience in molecular biology techniques (molecular cloning, DNA extraction, PCR, RT-PCR, gel electrophoresis, genome sequencing, and RNA sequencing).
The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.
Notes:
- This is a 1 year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 of years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
- This position requires completion of a background check.
- Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
