| Description & Details: We invite applications for postdoctoral Research Associate position in the Department of Zoology in Central Cambridge on Downing Street with Professor Chris Jiggins’ research group. It is funded for up to two years, in the first instance, by the Newton Trust and a European Research Council grant and should start on 1 June 2016 or thereafter.
Specific goals of this position The analysis will focus on a data set currently being generated using sequence capture technology to generate high coverage sequence data for a large set of ~250 individual butterflies across many populations of the species H. melpomene, H. cydno, H. timareta, H. heurippa and H. elevatus. The genome regions captured include known wing patterning genes, candidate selective sweep regions and randomly chosen ‘background’ scaffolds, representing about 10MB of sequence. The analysis will involve testing for selection at wing patterning loci and investigating the evolutionary history of the wing patterns. This will build on our recent work published in PLoS Biology (Wallbank, R. W. R. et al. PLoS Biol 14, e1002353) documenting the history of introgression and recombination at the optix locus. There is scope for the exact focus of the biological analyses to reflect the interests of the candidate. |
