Description & Details:  Applications are invited for a 3-year postdoctoral position at the Section for Microbiology and the associated Center for Geomicrobiology, Aarhus University, Denmark. The position is available immediately or as agreed.

We seek a highly motivated candidate with documented research experience in microbial physiology and environmental microbiology to participate in the research project “self-healing concrete”. The project aims to explore the use of microbially-induced calcium carbonate precipitation to enhance the lifetime of subsurface concrete structures in marine off-shore oil and gas production facilities. The responsibilities and tasks include conducting laboratory-based experiments with bacterial cultures simulating the subsurface environmental conditions; with modeling of microbial process rates and water chemistry relevant for calcium carbonate production and stability; and with laboratory-scale model systems of microbiologically amended concrete. Overall, the project integrates fundamental and applied research within the fields of microbial physiology, environmental microbiology, biogeochemistry, and the concrete chemistry.

The experimental work will be performed in collaboration with a PhD student at the Department of Bioscience, and a PhD student and chemists from the Department of Chemistry at Aarhus University working on the same project. The project is funded by the Danish Hydrocarbon Research and Technology Centre, which is part of a national targeted effort to improve recovery of oil and gas from the Danish North Sea (http://www.oilgas.dtu.dk).
