Description & Details: Phosphorus is an essential and non-replacable nutrient, and natural deposits of phosphate rock used for the production of fertilisers and feed phosphates are limited. Phosphorus is removed from agricultural soil with crops and if our food production is to be safeguarded, it is necessary to continuously replace the removed phosphorous. Danish agriculture is characterised by a large export of animal products as well as large imports of feed and around 70 per cent of crop P requirements are covered by livestock manure, while 16 per cent is imported annually in mineral fertiliser. Less than 10 per cent of the need is met by residues. Danish agriculture produces a P surplus of 21,000 tonnes each year. Being able to substitute the imported fertilisers with P in residues in combination with a better utilisation of P in animal manure is therefore an overall headline for our research on how to manage the phosphorus ressources in agriculture. |
