| Description & Details: Applications are invited from potential postdoctoral researchers to work in Professor Hari Hundal’s lab in the Division of Cell Signalling & Immunology on a Diabetes UK funded project investigating the impact of fatty acid availability on mitochondrial biology and cellular inflammation.
It is well established that cell and tissue function is critically dependent upon mitochondrial energy homeostasis. However, under circumstances of continual caloric excess mitochondrial function is compromised resulting in metabolic dysfunction, which has been linked to development of inflammation and insulin resistance in tissues such as skeletal muscle. This research project aims to understand (i) how mitochondrial insufficiency induced by lipid (fatty acid) overload contributes to increased inflammatory signalling and insulin resistance in muscle cells, (ii) how inflammatory signalling may potentiate mitochondrial dysfunction and (iii) how impaired mitochondrial function and proinflammatory signalling induced by fuel oversupply can be mitigated to improve skeletal muscle insulin sensitivity.
