| Description & Details:
Applications are invited for a 3 year post-doctoral position funded by the BBSRC. We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated post-doctoral scientist to investigate the role of S-acylation in plants. S-acylation (palmitoylation) is a highly important yet poorly understood lipid based post-translational modification of proteins. We recently discovered that ~40% of the plant membrane proteome undergoes S-acylation. Membrane proteins enable entry and exit of molecules to cells, allow pathogens to be perceived, synthesise the cell wall, organise cellular structure, regulate trafficking and act as signalling platforms as well as many other functions. As a result S-acylation is a potential mechanism for regulating numerous core cellular processes of interest to basic science and important for addressing societal issues such as food and energy security. Building on these data we have discovered that individual S-acylated proteins can change S-acylation state in response to specific stimuli or cycle S-acylation state as part of their normal cellular function. |
